Program Changes and Updates

August 15th, 2014

We hope you all enjoyed a great summer! It is hard to believe vacation days are nearly over, and the new school year is here.

We are happy to report another successful year. We solidified the academy's position as one of the top high performance tennis programs in the state of Texas. We are proud to report multiple players had a great year and reached career high rankings in their respective age divisions. The "achievement award" undoubtedly goes to Marlee Zein for her performance at the USTA national clay court championships where she won her first "Bronze ball." Great work! We expect Marlee to continue her improvement, and, with a little more work, achieve Gold.

We also look forward to improving our daily operations. In order for this to occur, several notable changes take place as of September 1st.

First, there is a renewed effort to continue building on our strengths. Our broad tennis curriculum supported by our great coaching staff has been, and will remain, the academy's foundation. We are lucky to have experienced and passionate coaches whose extensive expertise is ,again, the vehicle to maximize our players' potential. Koko continues to maintain the daily assignment schedule, while the coaching staff's input will be discussed with the students at the end of practice. The daily fitness routine is substituted by a 15 minute analysis sessions, with the purpose of reinforcing daily tasks. Interactive conversation is encouraged to clarify and solidify the newly acquired knowledge and skills.

Second, we will focus on quality over quantity. Practices run Monday through Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with Friday being a rain make-up day. First ball is hit at 4:30 p.m. The ZAT times are 5-7 pm with first ball hit at 5pm. It is the player's responsibility to allocate time for a proper warm-up prior to practice start time. Players are separated in groups according to gender to address tennis specific facets due to physical differences. The change to a monthly periodization format allows higher volume/narrow focus sessions. The high repetition mode, along with a strong attention-to-detail, will contribute to serious stabilization of the students' progress. We look forward to molding our students into problem solvers who transform from ball strikers into smart tennis players.

Thirdly, in the case of bad weather, the Champ/Superchamp practice is canceled. Make-ups, as mentioned, take place on Fridays. However, the ZAT group is expected to participate from 5-6:00 p.m. via alternative practices in the Sports Zone. Rain cancellations are announced no later than 4pm on bad weather days via Twitter or Facebook. Pricing changes: champ/superchamp 3day@$350 and 4day@$375; ZAT 2day@$275 and 4day@ $300.

We are working on clothing sponsorship for our top players participating in the full 4day program. The top 2 players in each age division will be eligible for full clothing sponsorship, while others will be offered steep discounts, up to 70% off( details to follow.) We look forward to reporting the establishment of a travel team in 2015, which will give players the chance to travel to tournaments out of the country.

Lastly, the feedback we received regarding our tournament coaching fee doesn't support its continuation at the Champ/Superchamp level. Coaching will be available upon request.

The city's tennis landscape has been quite fragmented over the last ten years. The predominant form of organized group practices has morphed into hitting sessions with little correlation between proper technique and player development. We look forward to filling a void. We have no doubt the right combination of proper instruction, detailed periodization and intense hitting provides the environment for all level players to excel!

Moving Locations - Westside Tennis & Fitness

December 16th, 2010

As you may have learned by now, beginning December 1st, 2010 the Houston Tennis Academy has moved to Westside Tennis & Fitness, located at 1200 Wilcrest Dr, Houston, TX 77042. Practicing at these facilities offers us the opportunity we have long been looking for.

The ability to use indoor courts will allow us to have the training continuity we sorely missed in the past. The on site collaboration with PLEX, a specialist in sports medicine and human performance, will offer our players customized speed and agility training sessions. To work out at the gym, play basketball and soccer will give our players the chance to become the complete athletes we envision.

Our practice hours will remain the same. For additional information:
